High Nitrite NO2 (Water is Purple) Reading - Help

Hello,

I just did a 25% water change in my 5 Gallon tank with 1 Betta and this is the Nitrite reading - should I be concerned? I was doing 25% water change once per week - should I be doing it much more? I'm using conditioned water, have a couple plants, have a heater, temp is at 80 degrees, use a filter, no other fish, etc. I made sure the water was conditioned today that I put in and it was 80 degrees as well. Fish is acting fine.

Please let me know, I'm super worried:

This was before or after the water change? How long has your tank been set up? If this was before I would do daily water changes of 40-50% until you get the nitrites as close to 0 as possible. Are using Prime as a water conditioner? If not does yours say it removes nitrites? I would start testing the tank daily BEFORE a water change & then do ~50% water change if ammonia or nitrites are >.25. Once ammo/nitrites are 0 & nitrates <20 every day for a week the tank is cycled & you can switch to weekly ~50% water changes.

Thank you for the quick reply Shellieca. That test was after I did a 25% change and thank god I did it. I just did a 50% water change and the water is light purple still - is it okay that I wait until morning to buy Prime and do it again?

Glad you tested the water. He should be fine overnight since you've gotten it down quite a bit. Its amazing how it can change so quickly from one day to the next.
