Is it okay if a betta is exposed to fin rot medication, even if it doesn't have fin rot?

I ask this because the other day in petco I found a really nice betta but it looked at if it had fin rot, and I really didn't have the money to afford him, meds, and a hospital tank.

It was one of these bettas.
I fell in love with him, but the black on the edges of his fins were really dark and didn't really fade into the yellow.

I would hesitate to medicate a fish unless you really know for sure what he has. I would just keep the water clean and keep an eye on him.

That looks alot like Faith's Emerald Dawns. They are beautiful! I would try salt baths and water changes before worrying about medications. A week worth of that is usually enough to deal with fin issues. Some times not, but often.

Also, a med tank doesn't have to be tank expensive. My new betta is in a 4 dollar vase I found at Walmart (in the fake plant section). You could also look at the critter keepers, I know at my local-ish petstore they have good sized ones for around 5-7 dollars. Or even a plastic tub. Big Lots and any dollar store has them for cheap.

And hes gorgeous! I'm afraid to go into a petco/petsmart... I even get distracted from my Walmart's bettas. (although they have a fabulous selection of VT and CT of all colors). If I saw that boy, I'd snatch him up as soon as I could. haha
