Make-shift Sponge Filter

I was wondering if it was possible to turn the regular filter I already have into a make-shift sponge filter so that my fry don't get sucked up inside. Would it would if I just put a sponge onto it?

Sorry if this is a silly question.

I'm assuming you have some kind of HOB (Hang On Back) filter. You can baffle the intake by adding filter sponge over the intake tube. You can get these ready-made for just this purpose. You can also use sponge at the outlet to baffle the outflow.

A sponge filter is a different style of filter which uses airflow to pull the water through the filter sponge. They require an airpump. Many breeders prefer this type for their fry tanks.
