too many bubbles (surface tension, air pressure?)

ok so does anyone know the best way to reduce surface tension in a small betta tank?

apparently the air pump for my undergravel filter is possibly too strong for my tank, I am not sure what the exact problem is. But, if I leave the lid off the bubbles seem to be less of a problem.

I want to make sure my betta can get to the surface and breathe properly, so this bubble problem needs to go away. I dont want to leave the tank uncovered and I want to keep the filter working properly.

Any suggestions?

They sell little valves to regulate flow from the air pump. You could get one of those, or possibly just crimp the air hose a bit.

ok i feel dumb... I've had many aquariums and totally didn't even think of this as a solution...
