looks to me like he might be hunting in the gravel- could be he has a strong instinct to look for food hiding in the gravel- or maybe the breeder fed him sinking food rather than floating food.

Well, he knows when food hits the surface, and actually has a harder time with the sinking ones. He just states at that one place and even backs up and charges at it. He's quite a character.
