:(

hey,

I've had a similar problem with adding new fish. I had a betta (since may) and added a 5 neon tetra's to the tank. And not long after all 6 fish had died. I know its no problem with the water as its been treated for ammonia, nitrates, ph balance and the water temperature is well with in range, iv also had the water tested at a local pet shop, and they say its fine :S.

After having the water tested i decided to buy some new fish, i bought 1 fighter and 5 platies, and exactly the same thing happened to them, they all died :(. any suggestions?

Would there be any other reason for these deaths apart from changing the filter sponge and adding a new plant in to the tank as these are the only things that have changed from 1 fish being happy. And then 6 fish dying?

thanks in advance

This may be a complete coincidence, but I experienced mass casualties in my community 30 gal last year after attempting to feed the ottos cucumbers. And I could never figure out what happened, but I lost 10 fish (mostly cardinal tetras). I always assumed it was due to a mysterious illness but your post makes me wonder... All of you with ottos, have you fed them cucumbers?

do you think it has anything to do with the pet shop i bought them from?, as iv recently read on other forums that pets at home do not care for their animals well :S and it is advised not to purchase from their stores

ThatT may well be the case. I would try buying from somewhere else if you can.
I'm sorry I can't be more helpful...

cardinal tetras are extremely delicate fish! Anything from a change between the PH level in the store tank to when you add them to your tank with different PH level - could kill off cardinals. Never mind issues with chemistry/water parameters.

I bought 5 Cardinals, and lost 3 in the first weekend I put them in the tank. I was lucky two survived, and they are now part of a neon tetra community.

Cardinal tetra should not be considered 'easy' beginner fish.

As for cucumber feedings - My otos loved the cucumber - the cories had no problems with them in the tank. Maybe my Bettas were suffering from dual problems - too much mulm in the water - my planted tank is definitely a work in progress. The new filter could have stressed them out too.

I don't know if I want to feed more cucumber to the tank. I've heard that otos love zuccini - so that's the next veggie on the list...

I'll avoid giving more cucumber (at least) until I resolve the excess plant detritus within that tank. I do believe I have more siphoning to do, and an assessment of what plants are better suited vs. not suited for my light source.
