Please recommend something to suck the gunk out of the bottom of the tank

What would be a good syphon to use? Or can I just get away with a turkey baster?

Lots of us use turkey basters for quick pickup (food, feces). You might try some airline tubing or something a little bigger diameter. Learn to siphon. It's not hard.

How big is your tank? I use a store bought gravel vacuum/syphon. It has a bulb I squeeze to get the water started flowing.

This is the one I have:

I also use a regular turkey baster for my 1g QT tank if I need to suck something off the floor outside of a water change.

I have a medium aqueon siphon. It pisses me off half the time though - so if you can find one where you squeeze a ball type thing to get it started, go with that one instead of the one where you have to shake it up in down to get the water flowing...

I also have a giant syringe that I use to suck up stuff. Its too short for a tank but it works well if you are floating someone in a cup.
