The longer the lift tube, the more flow through the filter. Without a lift tube, there is very little flow. The end of the lift tube must be below the waterline--- less than an inch but it's not critical. You can cut it off with a fine saw or a hot knife. Install it ragged edge down.

Do you know how to put an airstone into the filter? This really helps. The explanation in the filter instructions is not as clear as it might be.

No, how do you install an air stone? Ill do it! As for the tube, ill have to cut it down then. I can do that!

To heat-cut it, it helps to have a gas stove or a source of that kind of flame. Use an old butter-knife and gloves.

If you're cutting with a fine saw, wrap a layer of masking tape around the tube, draw your cut line in the middle. Saw gradually increasing depth around it.

To put in an airstone in a Hydro sponge filter:
Cut a 1/2in off your airline. Slip it over the nipple on the "plug-in" plate that points down inside the sponge. Slip the airstone into that.
