Algae and Toothbrushes

Hello! So I've heard of using toothbrushes to get rid of algae, and I was wondering how I should clean one of my old toothbrushes. I don't want to put plaque and toothpaste into my fish tank, but I don't want to introduce any harmful cleaners, either. How should I make sure it is clean enough to put inside my tanks? Thanks!

Honestly, I think you'd be safer just going out and buying a new one for 50 cents. Considering most toothpastes have warnings on them not to swallow the stuff... think of what that might do to your fish if it wasn't cleaned properly? With all of the bristles on toothbrushes, it would be pretty darn hard to make sure every bit of alcohol from the toothpaste was gone. And I'm not sure what else could be harmful to fish in toothpaste. I don't think I'd risk it.

I wish you luck! That darn algae, its a beast x.x I scrub it off and three seconds later its back again.

The best toothbrushes for teeth are soft. The best for cleaning are hard. So Canis's advice is best.

Persistent algae is usually caused by too much light and/or too few plants. The least light your plants will flourish in is best.

Thanks so much! My algae goes in stages... It's never there for a month, and then I have to scrub it off every other day for a month. I'll just get another one.
