Most shrimp need a filter sponge to eat off of. Mine get so happy about the sponge filter.

Sponge filters also prevent shrimplets from being sucked into the filter.

I have a Toms Internal Mini filter with spraybar which seems to work well, too. I also have lots and lots of moss and other plants.

As to number, 20-30.

I have sponge filters in both of my 5 gallon npts. Haven't put one in the RCS tank yet.
