I turn my lights on when I wake up, and turn them off about 11 at night. So they get like 12 hours light, 12 hours dark.

I did the same thing to all of my fish when I first got them, but I found out on a forum that it was WAY too much light. The only time a freshwater tank needs light is

a) For aesthetic use/observation.
b) For growing plants.

Unless your room has no windows, your fish is getting a good enough day/night cycle just from natural lighting. If you are growing plants, you might want to invest in a timer. They cost about $15 CDN and are not hard to find. Also you can hook them up to a power bar and use them to control multiple tanks if you want.

Just remember that if it is light enough for you to see in the room, it counts as day and when the room is pitch black it counts as night. No need for artificial lighting, espescially since betta are darkwater fish.

since my room is always bright, I only turn the lights on when it begins to get dark (6pm) and then turn them off before I go to sleep (11-ish).

Really, the only reasons I have the light on is to

#1- help heat the water
#2- so I can see my fishies c:
