male dt critique

I would like some opinions on my male dt. It is the fish in my avatar. I can't load a larger photo right now for some reason.

We'd have to see a flare picture to really be able to critique him but this is what I see for now:

He's a DT so you should be able to see the split clearly but he's got too much finnage to see it. His first few rays on his dorsal are stubby which is common on DT's but still a fault. Ventral fins are nice long and full. Lobes of the tail don't look proportionate and the fins meet up top but not on the bottom; caudal to anal fin. As for color he's an extremely mess tri-color. He could almost be a butterfly if that light blue went all the way around but it doesn't so therefore; messy

Body looks nice and long though, doesn't seem to have a crooked spine like most DT's, a bit spoon headed but otherwise not too bad.

Thank you that is what i saw. That is the best flare picture I have of him, and he was really going for it in that picture. He just doesn't flare much. Yes his color is quite messy. I have a solid purple female that I am planning to cross with him when she is a little older.

This is my female ct. I know she is not very good and its not a great photo. I am not breeding for really nice fish yet. I am going to someday, but right now I am working with a small local fish shop to offer locally bred fish.

In the photo of the female the flash makes her look blue with red. However under my normal lights she is a very nice purple with some dark pink not quite red on the ends of her fins.

I love her color and personality. She is still a bit young I think, the color on her body keeps coming in each week so I am giving them a little bit before breeding. Hope for the first spawn around middle of august.

Ideally you want the male to be bigger than her so he can wrap around her, if she's too large it won't work as well.

I suggest trying to research breeding DTs, and especially DTCTs.. I know some breeders working on the mix, but it can be very difficult as DTs aren't normally "beginner" breeders, and mixing two different tails can cause havoc. If you are interested I can send you a link where you can ask people who are working on such lines to find out how they are going about it.. as both DTs and CTs tend to require a bit different when it comes to placing them with a mate - DTs shouldn't be bred back to DTs (at least not past F1), CTs need HMs thrown in at some point to get the spread, etc etc.

So definitely try to get some info on breeding those two tail types together.. there is a reason it's rare to see DTCTs, and that they are just now starting to pop up every once in a while..
