lighting and cycling questions

Hey there. I just had 2 questions I was wondering about.
The first one is is it a good idea to have a light on near Galileo's tank during the day? He's near a window so he does get some natural light but there's a tree outside my window so it's pretty dim. When I turn the light on though his reflection is so intense that he flares at it near constantly.

My second question is about cycling. I was wondering what it is/what it does and how to do it (if I should choose to once I know what it is). Galileo's tank is a 2 gallon with no bubbler or filter. For heat I keep my room at 25 Celsius (about 80 F) and he has 2 fake plants and 1 real bamboo shoot.
