Here is some info on boiling rocks. This info was posted by Fish-for-all in the freshwater fish and aquariums section of FishForum.
DO NOT BOIL ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
As many of you are aware a lot of people use rocs in their aquariums. This is fine but there aresome things to know before using them. The first is to make sure they are inert. This is done by putting them in vinegar and seeing if they bubble. If they do they will change your tank parameters, most likely your GH but can change yur KH and pH drastically. Now this is wanted sometimes but as a general rule if it fizzes you don;t want to use it. The second is the best way to disenfect a rock is to use alcohol or to pour boiling over it.

NEVER BOIL A ROCK!

Regardless of what it is made of or the type, if there is any water in the rock it can explode and destroy your kitchen or even worse, YOU!

If you want to change your pH with rocks, make sure they are clean and the rights ones before using them.

If anyone has any more ideas for disinfecting rocks for the aquarium please post them. Also, any information on rocks that are specifically used for changing the chemistry of your aquarium for specific fish would be very useful for many members.

I washed my rocks lol. i srubbed them with soap and srubbed real rough one day, then i washed the soap off. I continued to rinse the rocks swish them with water for like 3 more days, i also ran hot tap water over the rocks. My fish are fine and nothing has happened to them.

I know what you mean about the fish being bored. I have my rescue in a 1 gallon and since I do 100% water changes everyday and am treating him for popeye and fin rot I didn't put anything in his tank, he looked so bored. I felt bad so I put a silk plant and a terra cotta pot in with him, he seems happier and they're easy to clean really quick when doing his water changes.

Whoa.
I didnt know that.
Thanks so much, about the rocks.
I think a dude at the petstore told me to do that.
So it would be okay to just wash them really well with soap and water?

I wouldn't use soap. Any left over could kill the fish. Just rinse it well with hot, hot water, and maybe use vinegar. If you use vinegar, make sure to rinse, rinse, rinse!

I actually have a little plastic plant.
It isnt too sharp, And Im hanging upside down in his jar so he can have at least something to play with.
It belongs to my turtle, and I rinsed it very, very well before I put it in his jar.
He seems interested and swims around it fairly enough.
Ive also hear that they are bad and can tear his fins.
I dont see any rips or tears right now, but should I take it out just in case?
Il post a picture of it later, but my little brother and his friend are having a sleep-over right in front of my Pickle.
Poor thing.

My little sister is nagging me...
Dx
