running a filter with no cartridge?

I had an impulse buy today, and now I'm trying to set up a 3.5 gallon for him to live in. The tank came with a little bitty HOB filter. I do not have a cartridge for it right now, but I can get one soon. I would like to go ahead and put the betta in, but does he need the filter right now? It's pretty strong with nothing in it.

I know cycling a 3 gallon is very controversial, but i have cycled this one before... However, I'm not sure whether I will again. For now, what water changes should I make?

I have a 3.5G I'm cycling right now. Why don't you get a sponge filter instead, as you said HOBs have a big flow. He doesn't need a filter.. I wouldn't try to cycle the tank unless you use a sponge filter. The tank isn't that small so I guess 1 100% and 1 50% will do per week.

Filter isn't necessary but you could maybe stuff with sponge instead of using a cartridge. when I used HOB filters I found sponge lasted much longer. I have a 2.5g & I do 2 50%+ water changes per week & throw in a 100% periodically.

Not really, I think I got mine for below $10.

You can make then, I think you just get an unused sponge and insert air tubing, then you connect the tubing to an aerator. I think that's what you do..?

Ok, thanks!

If I don't cycle, and do 1 50%, and 1 100%, do I have to vacuum on the 50%?

You can, if you want. A 3G isn't that small so I guess it won't matter as much as it would for a 1G.

Sponge filters are inexpensive, I've switched all my 10g & smaller over to them. The most cost is for the air pump. You can make one, there's actually a thread on here about them. As for vacuuming, I do it each time in my 2.5g so that nothing sits in there to add to the ammonia build up.

Yeah sponge filters!
I stuck a piece of sponge in one of my small "filters" and let it run without a cartridge. -- cuts down the flow and build up a bio load!!
