warning: gross!

I wiped this stuff off the airline connected to my sponge filter. Can anyone tell me what this crud is?

looks like it might be brown algae; diatoms but it's hard to tell in that light for sure.

I get it on my airline tubing as well. It's perfectly harmless just unsightly. I don't know what really causes it or what exactly it is but you can just wipe it off during water changes if it bothers you.

Thanks. Good to know it's harmless...You think it could be from having hard water?

Nope because my water is extremely soft and I still get it.

Could be a reaction between the plastic and some kind of bacteria or something in the water?

That stuff shows up on some of the surfaces in my bettas tanks, particularly the heaters and resting leaves. I just chalk it up as dirt and crud, and I rinse it with hot water and rub it off when I'm cleaning tanks. I've never really thought of it as anything in particular, because it hasn't harmed anyone.
