@Lilnaugrim is correct. I had a VT that had the same injury on his tail. Unfortunately he passed away before it could fully heal.

I'm not certain of this, but that very off veiltail shape MIGHT be the result of someone cutting his tail to look like that. The even, smooth edges of the inside of the long veil forks suggest cutting to me. It's not unheard of for people to do that as a way to make the fish more "exotic". I suppose it might also have been done as a way to clean up a nasty injury. We had a poster here once who would take a razor to areas of fins that had nastiness who swore it helped prevent infection from spreading. I've got major issues with the idea of doing any kind of surgery on a fish without anesthesia outside of dire emergency, however.

I agree with the others. It looks like at one point he had fin-rot and is now recovering and growing back his fins. You can see the edges are clear and that is how mine looked when he was recovering from fin-rot. He will grow back to a full vt in no time. He has gorgeous colors. congrats!
