What is the best size grow out tank?

I know the amount of fry vary, but what is the norm. Should I get a 20gal long, 40gal long/breeder, or just a 55gal??

Basically the bigger the better - for growouts. Since they could reach hundreds, a 55g would be best.

I would go no smaller than a 29g personally, but as indjo says, bigger is always better - just depends on what is in your budget. Multiple grow outs come in handy, so find what best suits your budget and space

I don't mean to hijack but, are thick plastic storage bins okay for growouts?

Yes and no - if they are clear then sure, if they are solid then I would go against it.. just so you can keep an eye on them easier and cull as needed. Will be able to see ones who are fighting, and ones who have been injured.

I also don't like how dark they can become, the solid colored ones.

For "deep" storage such as you have excess females and haven't found a wholeseller or store to take them yet, you can dump a bunch in there to keep for a while. Just know that you won't be able to really see if any are fighting or injured, etc. Or rather, it will be tougher to see if any are injured.
