setting up a small betta tank

hey everyone! i'm looking to set up what i think is a 3.5 gallon tank for a single betta fish. I've read some conflicting information about whether it's best to cycle the tank or just do complete water changes regularly. what would you reccomend? also, should i have a small filter or no? i've never kept betta fish before (although i do have a happy community tank) and any advice would be appreciated!

Well, you'll need a filter if you want to cycle. IMO it's much easier and keeps the tank quite clean. You should do it if you can.

Personally, I would cycle. You can pick up a Red Sea Nano filter or even something as simple as a sponge filter.

A sponge filter would be adequate for seeding bacteria when you are cycling a tank. It's best not to remove everything in the tank at one time when cleaning or you'll lose your beneficial bacteria. Also, don't squeeze the sponge out too often or too thoroughly.

My vote goes with cycled. It gives you sooooo much more flexibility especially if you go on vacation or whatnot.
