I've been told by some others on here that betta fix is actually bad for BETTAS. Something in it, destroys the labyrinth organ. Use stress coat instead.

Do you have second hand stores? Or anything like kijiji / craigslist? Some people sell them dirt cheap.

What bettafix does, is when over used it can coat the labyrinth organ. Yes "it works" and there will be testimonials about it... But really, it's a "fix all" not "fix this one problem".

Before trying salt or any medication, try simple TLC by upping water changes. Usually all you need to do. Now sometimes when it becomes very bad, you need to use either salt or medications.
Another note... Don't use salt as an additive. It is also harmful to their "fresh water only" systems. Only use as a medication when absolutely needed.

When I get a bigger tank for my betta, is there anything that would be suited for the 0.8gallon tank? Like tiny fish?

Unfortunately, not really. I heard of people keeping "nano aquariums" with mainly just shrimp.. All other fish need a cycled, larger tank due to the bioload, the fact they are schooling fish, shoaling fish, or just grow big.

I usually keep smaller tanks to use as hospital or quarantine tanks for fish and plants.

So I ended up getting my betta a 5.5gallon because it was on sale, and I don't fill it all the way. Fins definitely showed improvement, but I feel like they have stopped improving. There's also a heater and I've been putting in a bit of salt with every water change. Is this a normal healing rate? It's been about a week for the new tank and heater
