Caroline: Emergency!

About a week ago, one of my family members adopted Caroline, a sweet, curious little girl. We both love her so much. I told my Caroline owner to change the water in the the bowl ( 1 gallon) about every day, but when I came back a few days later, the water was a bit dirty and Caroline was hiding under the rocks added to her bowl. I asked my family member if she soaked the rocks in warm water, and she answered no. She is new to betta keeping, so I don't expect her to know everything.
At first I thought Caroline was just trying to hide, since I read they don't always like to be out in the open. So I went and bought some supplies to build a little cave with rocks. Then I realized Caroline had a lump on her side, near her tail.

I'm afraid Caroline's life depends on this, so help is appreciated! Thanks!

Now Caronline is laying a little on her side. Her lump is bigger and there are streaks of grey on her tail. One fin is clamped to her side. I have to help her get to the surface to breath. I lowered the water to help her, but its not working.

Can you post some photos? I'd especially like to see the gray areas and the lump.

Also, Bettas are tropical fish, so 70F is too cool for them. Can you slowly raise it to about 76F over the course of a day?

(Don't go over 75-76F right now, as too high a temp can encourage bacterial growth.)

Do you have any Epsom salt or medications on hand?

Thank you
I took her to a reliable pet store (I couldn't before because it was closed) and they said Caroline had been over fed. That makes sense, since she is small, but I still don't understand the lumps all over her body, that seemed to grow.

She was placed in a small box after she died, and I dug a hole next to some flowers to place the box in.
