New Beta need HELP!!

I just bought a new Beta fish two days ago, and really don't know much about fish at all. I put transferred it from the pet store water into a small tank filled with bottled water at room temperature. I used the drops to neutralize the ph as the pet store recommended and transferred the fish. After the first 12 hours, I noticed the fish had some strange "fuzz" on a little part of it's body. I though maybe it was from the fake plant in the tank.

When I came home from work today the "fuzz" has spread. It is in several places on the fishes body, fins, and around one eye and part of his face. The fuzz looks like foam, or wisps of cotton or soap suds, or maybe some type of fungus!

The fish's tale also looks like it is shredded as well. I'm going to remove the fake plant in case that is the problem. And he is not acting like "himself."

Please help! Does anyone know what is wrong with my fish and what I can do?? I feel so badly!

It sounds maybe like ick and fin rot? Some medications will treat both of these, but I've never had ick on any of my fish so hopefully someone can help you out that knows. I hope he gets better! :(

Help us help you:

1) Tank size?
2) Water temp? Do you have a heater?
3) pH?
4) Ammonia?
5) Nitrite?
6) Nitrate?
7) How often do you clean the tank? How much water do you change?
8 )Are you adding anything eg. water conditioner, salt to the water?

And lastly, can you get a picture?

Ich is unlikely. Fin rot does not occur on the body. It sounds bacterial (the shock of acclimation can do a number on the immune system), but it's hard to know. The only thing I can decipher is that it's spreading fast, so complete the questions asap for best results.

Ringram, I've got a similar thing going on with my betta. I'm treating him with Bettafix, but I don't really know if it's working yet.

Just for reference, the effects of BettaFix/MelaFix/PimaFix are so controversial that I suggest the OP refrain form using any of these products until we have a diagnosis.

I DO NOT reccomend Bettafix now! Please use something different.

So sorry to hear that. Sounds like he was sick when you got him.

Don't give up on bettas. They're amazing fish.

ya it sounded like he was sick when you got him. for future reference, ick looks like salt has been sprinkled on the fish. fungus or a bacterial infection can look cottony or fuzzy.
