Over a week ago I was in PetSmart and noticed that they had a group of bettas on a $2 sale table. Found a smaller pale albino-looking guy in the back in a dirty cup. An employee told me he would never get sold because he was "pale and ugly," so of course I brought him home.
I settled him into what was my 5.5 gallon isolation tank after slowly adding tank water to his bag over several hours. When I finally let the poor guy loose he seemed overwhelmed by the size of the tank. Spent the first few days hiding behind the filter. One big surprise is that within days his color darkened and changed - he's a beautiful pineapple color with some darker orange streaking in his fins.
After 10 days he's finally spending more time in the open than in hiding, and today he ate for the first time. Right now he's busy swimming around exploring the tank - first time I've seen him do that. He seems healthy and happier. He even flared at his reflection in the glass. I'll try to get some pictures now that he is more settled.
I think I'm going to set up a new isolation tank. I don't want to upset him by moving him again!
