I personally think that having multiple fish next to eachother gives them something to do all day. My fish in the divided tanks and the tanks next to eachother are much more active than when I only had one fish all by himself. I have found that a male and a female in a divided tank works very well because they can flirt with eachother without getting as stressed out as two males might, but I think 2 males is fine as well so long as they get along ok.
