What's wrong with my betta?

Please help! My betta has been acting very sick. He is having difficulty swimming, not eating, and when he does swim he is mostly vertical. He is now lying mostly on the rocks and not moving about. I tried giving him a pea but he would not eat it. There is waste in the tank, so I don't think he is constipated. Please help!

How long have you had him? What's the temp in his tank? How big is his tank and how many times a week do you clean it? Sorry for all the questions, but this will help us try to determine whats wrong.

I've had him for almost two years and his is in a one gallon tank. We clean his tank regularly.

A 1g tank must be cleaned every 2-3 days to keep toxins produced by the fish (eg ammonia and nitrite) to a safe level. Clean the tank every 2 days until he gets better. You will also need to keep the water temperature at 78-82 degrees. Bettas prefer warmer water than most tropical fish. In a tank this small, a heater will cook the water so you will want to raise the room temperature to about 26 to hea the bowl.

Or if you want to make your life 200% easier, swing by Petco and pick up a 5g Minibow and a heater.

Yeah, I clean my 1G's 3 times a week to keep it very clean. I've also heard that peas are very bad for bettas because they can't digest them easily.

Daphnia is a healthier alternative to peas.
