The nitrification process requires oxygen (aerobic conditions), without which the bio-filter will crash. But the less ammonia and nitrites they are converting the less O2 they are use up in the water column. The bio-mass will down size to the levels of available nutrients.

I'm dangerously close to moving day and just had an idea..... I have a bunch of rocks in the tank.... One of the other tanks will have gravel, which I have already. If I put the gravel in with the rocks, maybe some bacteria will transfer over and make the 2nd tank go more smoothly?

Pretty tempting.

I really should be packing, but I'm worrying about this instead!

Comments? I guess it can't hurt, right?

Yes. That is the principle of using "seeded" media to jumpstart the cycle. This is the most common method of starting a nitrogen cycle in a new tank.

Keep your filter wet at all times.A seeded (cycled) filter is also an important source of bacteria
