Ripped fins?

I'm going to be taking a betta for a few days until I can give him to my friend who is also a betta fanatic. This is unless I fall in love with the little guy (regular blue VT, I already have one that looks like him -Scuito<3- so I probably won't).
In the pictures I have seen of him he appears to have ripped fins. How can I treat this? I have BettaFix, but honestly, I have never seen a huge improvement in any of my betta's fins while using this stuff. I really can't afford to go buy another medicines.
Any tips on how to heal the fins up quickly?

You could try some salt dips with aquarium salts, they will help kill bacteria and prevent infections
