Help before we Re-Thor (the fish)

First, thank you to all the nice folks who helped me out last night as I tried to figure out what led to the downfall of Thor the Fish I.

We are heading out to get ReThor the Fish soon, along with a heater just in case.

I've prepped the 2.5 gallon tank, put in the water conditioner, etc. Water temp is about 71 currently.

My question is, when we get the heater, should we transition ReThor to his tank before turning on the heater, or should we bring the temperature of the water up to 76-78 degrees before the transition process, thereby just making it part of the transition? Hope that question makes sense.

Also, ReThor will probably arrive in a plastic Tupperware-like container. Think that container will float in the tank to aid in the water transition? If not, what's the recommended approach? Keep him out of the other tank entirely until we replace most of the pet store water with the new tank water over 60 minutes or so?

Sorry for the nit-picky questions. Just want to minimize my chances of performing another burial at flush over the next 24 hours.

I would definitely get the heater and have the temp set to where it's going to be then put him in.
Yes, float the cup in his tank and let the water in his cup reach the temp of the tank. Then, slowly add water from the tank to the cup until the cup over flows and release him. You can reduce the amount of the original water in the cup if there is a lot.
Good luck!

Thank you for the replies.

Our new blue Betta is getting acclimated right now. He's in his original container and is mostly-submerged in the new tank. The ratio of old to new water is about 50% right now in his old container. In another 10-15 minutes I am going to add more water, which will likely submerge him all the way and free him into the new tank.

Trying to convince my son to name him "Mo" instead of his preferred name, "Avatar". Because then he'd be "Mo Betta Blue." But I'm not convincing him.

Haha! Both names are a good choice.

Lol, I've got a Mo Betta too. ^_^ He's a handsome indigo blue fellow.

Yeah, when I thought of the name "Mo" I thought to myself, "I bet there are quite a few Mo Betta Blue fish out there."

I've lost the naming battle, but while the rest of the family calls him "Avatar" I am putting up token resistance by calling him "Movatar".

He seems to be doing OK. He's much larger than the one that didn't make it. He likes to hang out up under the filter, which is making us a little nervous, since that is what the other one liked to do, too. But I am assuming that they like that area because it is a darker area of the tank and the most "grotto-like" for hiding.

Every few minutes he takes a tour around the tank and goes "on patrol", so I take that as a good sign. The first guy didn't really do that.

When my betta was first in his new 16 gallon, he hid too. He HATED the light. It freaked him out. Good luck with your new guy! Sounds like he's well on his way.
