noisy internal filter

my aquatop if-202 has a low audible hum that I can't figure out where it's coming from. Should I attempt to return it after it's been in my tank for over a week? or is there something I can do?

I found on youtube that cleaning the impeller housing and applying vaseline helps but I am not sure about it being in my tank.

Sometimes the impeller takes some time to break-in. My internals have gotten quieter over time.

since I have snails I may take it apart and just give it a good cleaning to make sure nothing is in there

gave it a good cleaning and will wait and see if it breaks in and gets any quieter or I get used to the new sound.

I am starting to think I may turn it into a external canister style filter

That sounds interesting. How do you plan to do that?

I was browsing YouTube when I found some videos that placed the unit inside of PVC and then ran tubing to the tank for inlet/outlet.

do a search for DIY Canister Filter and watch a few of them. The one I found that set the idea in motion was this one and they just used a submersible pump. http://youtu.be/_wjK_DvXtwA

ok. I haven't got a chance to do the canister mod, but the hum is just as audible as the day I got it.

you might try lapping the impeller in with toothpaste (lapping compound doesn't work well with plastic.

Below this thread are a number of "Similar Threads." See if there's some good ideas there.

I went back to google to see if there was anything I missed and found several idea's that I am not sure about. It involves lubrication with either petroleum jelly or a silicone based lubricant. Not sure how I feel about the potential chemical contact with the tank water.

Next I was going to take it out and double check to make sure it's straight and not out of round. To be on the safe side I was going to pick up a spare impeller but I can't seem to find any for my particular unit.

I will read through the other threads and see what happens. Thanks Hallyx
