The heater is in the .5gal bowl--it works perfectly, it keeps the water temp in the upper 70s-low 80s, which is great considering my apartment is kept pretty cold (60s). I have a thermometer to monitor the temp so I know he will not be "fried". Also, according to a friend who breeds bettas, she keeps her adult bettas in a <.5gal tank and changes the water weekly, with no ill effects--so tank size is not everything as long as you don't intentionally over feed and slack on the weekly 100% water changes (with treated water)
