He sounds like he could be a tail biter if he reopened the slits.. I don't know how they do it but my TB always manages to get a long slit (with no sharp anything in his tank). You should watch him for the next few weeks and see what he does.. if he fully heals and doesn't mess his tail up again then your in the clear.. if not then he may be a TB (tail biter)
