I use white plain 'ol kids play sand. Plants love it and fish have no issues with it. Comes in lots of colors, mainly tan here, white is a bit more $, but gives the tank a very different look.

Floralite or Eco Complete im starting a nano planted tank and using Eco Complete, i like the black and they have it at petco.
