I'm at a point in my life where I know that I'm going to lose my mother and several friends who are elderly and I dread the time. Yeah, birthdays and holidays are hard when you've lost loved ones.

I lost my elderly neighbour who I known for as long as I can remember. He was like a grandfather to me, and the hardest thing was how quickly he went. I spoke to him only hours before he collapsed and went into hospital, and then saw him again several days later a few hours before he passed. To see him very much alive and talking and then unconscious and dying was something I will never forget.

I still think about him and still expect to see him sitting in his chair watching television when I go over and visit. It's been a couple of months now, and while life moves on, I think some part of you never does.

There's no right or wrong way to deal with grief so don't ever listen to anyone who tells you otherwise.

Talking is a great way of coping. I go and visit his wife every couple of days and sometimes our entire conversation revolves around him. Sharing stories and looking back on all the good times goes a long way towards helping you heal.

LBF that sounds like what I went through with a neighbor 13 years ago. He was like a father/grandfather figure to me and always watched out for me and my mom. When he died I was devastated. I grieved for him more than I did my own father. Like you, I went to see him 24 hours before he died and it was so hard to see him comatose and hooked up to machines.
