Treating Fin Rot Question

So my Betta, Earl, has had fin rot for awhile. It's gotten to the point that I am choosing to medicate him.

I plan on using MelaFix, but I wanted to know what your thoughts were on treating him when he has a snail companion?

Earl is rather camera shy but:

You can't really see but it's on his Pectoral fins too.

He is beautiful.. I adore this little guy.

I was told by another user recently that because it had made it's way onto his pectrol(I think that's the word) fins, that I should start using actual medicine.

So starting Monday/Tuesday this is the course of action:

Make a temporary tank for Ms. Riley snail, as she is a baby, out of a two quart mason jar. I have more fake plants coming in the mail, that should be coming on Monday, so that will be used in her temporary tank along with some gravel, she should be content for a week. It'll also give me a change to feed her without Mr. Bubble butt Earl over here carrying the carrot/food away! XD And then the mason jar will possibly be set in the tank for heating, I'm not sure yet how it's going to fit as I only have a 1.5 gallon tank. And then Earl will be treated with Melafix for a week, along with lots of water changes, seeing as I have to take the filter out.(The cartridge needs replacing anyway.)
