Spiderfish has ich :( just saw two dots on his head..they would not wipe off when I petted him. then i found this in his 3 gallon tank: what is it? It looks like spider silk. Contributing to his ich? Also my heater stays a constant 80 degrees...what can I do to make the water warmer while treating the ich? Thanks! Any help on both subjects would be awesome..I am totally dumb when it comes to such things.

The cobwebs are mystery goo, white slime, they go by many aliases. The common thread I have seen is that they appear to develop on new equipment made from rubbery or plastic material such as suction cups or heater brackets. I am assuming it is some sort of leachate from the plastic. As far as I know it has no ill effects on fish health and can be easily wiped off. After wiping it off a few times it should stop leaching and go away.
Turning up the heat in the tank does not technically 'cure' ich; it simply speeds up the lifecycle so that the parasite will drop off the fish to reproduce quicker. At this stage it is most vulnerable to medications. So while heat helps, you do not need to have a specific temperature to effectively treat ich.
Thanks Kelly! I called petco and the guy told me to first of all take my betta out of a heated situation, said betta's prefer room temp water and I was doing him a disservice. Why are people soo dumb? Geez, I told him to read up on bettas before telling people who were purchasing them that! i bought mardel ick treatment..and aquarium salt. Wish me luck!
You mean... the info coming over from Thailand says that they can be kept room temp but no one here in the states can do the difference in temp math? :P
