algae?

my 10g sorority tank is having an algae outbreak. my girls are all doing great. so my question is, will the algae bother my girls? i had some ghost shrimp in there but i think my girls made a snack of them :( would you suggest apple or mystery snails?

the temp in my tank is 80, i have live plants in there so turning the light off is something i dont want to do. they light is on a timer so they have it on for 10hrs

Any critter you put in there will ultimately produce more nitrates, fuelling the algae.

I assume you have a fluorescent, correct? What type of algae are you getting? Green dust? Brown? Hair Algae?

I would suggest cutting the photoperiod down to 8 hours. Anything more than that only causes algae. Also, you can try dosing some carbon or Seachem Excel which boosts plant growth without adding extra nutrients, causing the plants to suck up more excess nutrients.

yes im using a fluorescent light. the algae is brown and green dust. theres patches of both all over the place. i clean it and try scrubbing it off but its messing with me and just hanging on for dear life. ill adjust the timer, and make a trip to petco (hopefully i wont come home with any new fish)
thanks a ton :)
