Sand in the filter

So, it's getting near time to replace the media in my Tetra Whisper 40, and I was wondering if there's a way to keep sand from getting pulled into the filter? I've gotten used to brushing mud off the bio bag, but I'd really rather not have to keep doing it with the new one. If I tied a nylon to the intake, would that do the trick? I really want the new media to stay sand-free.

The intake is a good six inches above the sand, I've got the flow as low as it'll go, and I've even moved the sand around so that the area under the intake is bare, but it still works its way in there.

Prefilter doesn't have to be store bought but you can get an idea.
