Gravel vacuum

Hey everyone. I have bought an air pump and a sponge filter, and now I have a couple of questions for you to answer please .

1. Do I need to do any special preparations before getting the filter working?
2. After looking into water change recommendations with a filter, I guees I now need an gravel vacuum too. I have a 3.5 gallon tank with one betta, and I'd like a small one that would not suck up water fast so I could change water with the betta in it, and that will also be easily maneuverable (if that's a word).

Thanks!

Petsmart has a gravel vac in 3 or 4 sizes. They all have a pump on the hose for quick jobs and so you don't get a mouthful of fish water! I love mine. I bought the medium one even though I have a 3g and 5g because the longer hose makes work easier.

Thanks for the help, but I forgot to mention - I live outside of the US so I'll only be able to buy the gravel vacuum through ebay or amazon. Oh and that's an amazing tank in your profile picture!

You can use a piece of airline tubing. Just watch the water going through the tube so you don't get a mouthful of water.

This is my 50-cent siphon. Works great. You never have to clean it; just replace the tube.

Make one for each tank so you don't take a chance on spreading disease.

In my opinion, learning how to start a siphon by sucking on the tube is a fishkeeper's art that everyone should learn how to do.

Yeah, I've learned the hard way. I got the one from Walmart and it works fine, but I've gotten a few mouthfuls of fish tank water while learning.
