Treasure & CantePe

I've been reading your forums for the last 3 days. When I was a kid I remember the year they started selling "siamese fighting fish". I was about 11 years old when I got one on a whim while mall crawling with a friend.

Back then they told you to throw the poor thing in a glass and feed it fish flakes of any kind while changing the water once a week or two.

They still give that kind of advice at major pet stores, to an extent except they've "improved" the advice with a .6 gallon tank with an LED light and once a week water changes with plastic plants and cruddy gravel. Oh and betta fish food with a conditioner for the water. Guess that is an improvement from over two decades ago... not really.

Treasure was suppose to be a birthday gift for my 8 year old autistic girl. I got Treasure knowing full well *I* would be responsible for his well being and care (with daughter "helping" here and there).

Started out with the bad advice above, finished with a 200+ dollar mistake corrected. As in, I went all out and spent 200+ (I don't care about price, I care about Treasure, I'd do it again without batting an eyelash) to take Treasure out of the unheated, unfiltered .6 gallon mistake and put him in a heated, filtered and live planted 10 gal tank with a couple of snail buddies (trumpet and ramshorn).

Not only did his lethargy pass but his color improved and he became active and happy and bonded (every time I pass the tank he gets excited and does what I call his happy fishy dance).

I even read the fish photography tips thread and was complimented on my fishy photography skills *lol*

I thought I'd say thank you for schooling a newbie on betta fish and helping Treasure to have a happy and healthy life. He was from PetSmart (sister company of Petco? I'm in Ontario, Canada) by the way.

Here are a few pictures of Treasure:

Welcome to the forum!

We don't have petcos in Canada, which kind of makes me sad because in my opinion they are better then petsmart, but it also means that there are less stores selling live animals. By the way, for next time, you can save a lot of money by shopping online and at second hand stores/kijiji.

wow love your tank, very cute. And you got such good pictures! My two are so camera shy. They will stare at you for an hour but they know if you try and take photos, even if your trying to be sneaky!
