Too much at once?

Hello everyone,

My poor Indigo has fin rot. Just a very mild case. I put him in a one gallon hospital tank for the time being. I've put Prime, Stress Coat, and some aquarium salt. He also has been bloated for a few weeks. Not bad to the point where he can't swim, but he is kinda lazy. My question is can I add Epsom salt with all the other stuff I put in or should I wait until the fin rot is gone? And if I put Epsom salt in, how much?

I'm going to answer these questions based on the hospital tank:

What size is your tank? 1 gallon
What temperature is your tank? 81
Does your tank have a filter? No in hospital tank
Does your tank have an air stone or other type of aeration? No
Is your tank heated? Yes
What tank mates does your betta fish live with? In regular tank, he lives in a divided 10 gallon with 2 other bettas.

What type of food do you feed your betta fish? Omega one
How often do you feed your betta fish? Two pellets, twice a day. Fast on Saturday. Bloodworms on Sunday.

How often do you perform a water change? Once a week.
What percentage of the water do you change when you perform a water change? Around 50
What type of additives do you add to the water when you perform a water change? Prime

Water Parameters:
Have you tested your water? If so, what are the following parameters? No

Symptoms and Treatment
How has your betta fish's appearance changed? Ragged tail while some redish/blackish tips, rounded belly.
How has your betta fish's behavior changed?just kinda lazy
When did you start noticing the symptoms? Rounded belly - couple weeks ago, fin rot - today
Have you started treating your fish? If so, how? 1/4 teaspoon aquarium salt, stress coat
Does your fish have any history of being ill? No
How old is your fish (approximately)? No idea

I wouldn't use Epsom salt and aqua salt together. Just the Epsom salt.

If the only symptoms are tattered fins and a slightly rotund tummy-I would stop the Aquarium salt and only do a tannin water treatment along with water changes and good nutrition.

If he becomes symptomatic to the enlarged buoyancy issues, clamp fins, lethargic, hiding, stops eating to name a few S/S that you might see with true bloat or swim bladder issues. Then re-eval and look at starting a treatment with Epsom salt.....

What I would recommend based on the S/S you listed...QT with partial water changes using premixed tannin stained water, exercise and good nutrition.

Good that you already QT him in a 1gal unfiltered tank-IMO/E any time you question the well being of the Betta-Isolate in QT for better observation and its always better to treat in QT.....

Premix you tannin treatment water in a 1gal jug of Dechlorinated water-
I use naturally dried and fallen from the tree Oak leaves for my tannin source-I use about 20 leaves crushed/gal or you can use IAL 1 large crushed/gal-Either will work-they contain antibacterial/fungal properties, they can help toughen scales/fins with long term use, helps to ease stress...etc.....Let the crushed leaves steeps for at least 1 hour before use-Shake well and don't worry about any of the leaf bit that fall in the tank-they won't hurt anything and the Betta usually like to peck/graze on them...

Make a 50% water change on the 1gal-and fill the tank using the premixed tannin water over 10-15min until full-Then-Add 3-4 whole Oak leaves to the tank itself or if you are using IAL-tear a small leaf in half and add to the tank-This will allow the tannins to slowly leach out over time too.

In 24h start the partial water changes-Using the premixed tannin stained water-Make 50% water changes every 3 days for 14 days. Then re-eval....

Nutrition-if you have live mosquito larva-offer these several times a day-If not-good quality varied diet in small frequent meals.

You might want to exercise him too...get food can help get them moving-mosquito larva, live bearer fry-something they have to chase, food on a toothpick...You can use a mirror to make him flare or another Betta...etc...

Good luck...
