And is there something else I should have done?

I helped my mom clean her 55g today and we noticed this guy looking half dead and his fins look ate on. So I nabbed him and put him in some clean conditioned water (same temp) with a tiny but of aquarium salt (very tiny bowl) and some very diluted melafix. I couldn't leave him there long because I wasn't sure how long he would live without the filter. He was looking a tiny bit better when I put him back in. Is there anything else I can do?
