Water changes!?

Hey everyone! Just wondering What do you do when you change the water and vaccum the gravel? Do you take your fishy out and put him in a seperate bowl with the tank water or do you leave him in there?
Today I did a big clean on the tank, it wasnt filthy or anything just thought it would be nice. So I took Haru out in a seperate bowl with the same water from the tank, did around a 90% water change, took all the ornaments and plants out, and vaccumed the gravel. While Haru was in the bowl he became VERY pale! it was scary! so I did it as quickly as possible. once he was back in the tank his colour came back instantly and he was happy as a clown. Soooo just wondering what you do???? and was it wrong for me to pull him from the tank temporarily?
Thanks!

Well,

How big is your tank?

How often do you do water changes?

You have a 10 gallon, right? That's a pretty big amount, and there's no reason to take him out. I leave my bettas in the tank as I gravel vac, and they do just fine. I also don't find taking the ornaments out either, as this MAY affect the cycle, but I'm not sure (I never pulled them out during a cycle). Just a thought.

During the first times, he may be troublesome (going towards the vac), but he gets used to it. :)
