Would this Filter Do for a 5 gallon?

I have a 5 gallon tank that i am redoing since I lost my male VT Picasso recently. One of the issues I had with our current filter is that the water flow was too strong and I wonder if that stressed him. When we were at walmart I found a Tetra Whisper filter. It says that it's gentle but is supposed to be for 1-3 gallons. http://www.tetra-fish.com/sites/tetr...d=1276&cid=866

Would this still work for a 5 gallon tank with one fish and plants in it?

It would work but when it comes to filtration more is always better. I would go with the bigger version of this filter and just buffer it. I use these filters and they are easily buffered.

For Betta's Sponges are probably the best way to go,
That is what I end up using in most all my Male betta tanks.

one small pump will run 3 sponge filters..

By the way, The filter image you posted "tetra whisper filter, Is Garbage in my opinion, The most mickey moused rig I ever wasted money on.

That's the filter I use for my 2.5 mini-bow tank and it works really well. My betta, Blowfish, even goes and sits under it's current and lets it push him down and then he comes back up. It's very gentle and quite. If you are going to use it for a 5 gallon then I would go up a size (unless it doesn't come for 5 gallons) then I would go with a different filter or you could just give it a try. It might work.

Doesn't the tank your getting come with a filter? I thought the 5 gallon kits came with a filter.

Yeah, it came with a power filter but the current is pretty strong and since I'm redoing the tank anyway I figured I'd explore different filter options.

Use the filter it came with,
Just take a ziplock bag, put a few stones/gravel in it for weight and tape it to the top of the filter and let it hang over the outlet, Current drastically reduced and your betta shouldn't mind it.
here's a pic/

Yup.. that works or you can get a sponge and some rubber bands like I did mine. That is a much better filter (I still like the whispers though) and if you ever decide to do live plants or add a tank mate the extra filtration will be good.
