lol i have bettas for 7.5 years and i am paranoid all the time. I did had 3 heaters malfunctioned before. One tank the temp overnight was 65*, and another two- overheated . All bettas were fine though. I do check the water temperature daily before i leave to work and when i come from work. Lol i am person who always worry i probobly check on them all the time when i am home:)
About filters i am not experienced because i had it only once, with my first betta and it didn't go too good.

Yea I watch mine constantly I just noticed my other Betta ripped his fin also I really think it's the filter intake as all my plants are silk and rubberish no hard plastic

how is he doing?
Baffle the filter intake. Just make sure you also rinse it in the dechlorinated water to clean it.

Or this one has another sponge on the intake

He's doing good the fins are the same not any worse I didn't get the sponge baffle he's been making a lot of bubble nest now his appetite is still very good he's swimming normal and seems happy. But my other Betta has fin rot so I got him some aq salt and gave him a salt bath yesterday so I hope it goes away before it gets any worse

Are you sure your other betta didn't bite the tail? Do you think his fins has discolored edges?
