Strong filter

I just bought a new tank yesterday and divided it up. It's currently running without the boys in it to give it a chance to settle down. But the filter it came with is extremely strong on the side with the output. Is there anyway that I could slow it down? The way it's set up I can't use a cut bottle, the filter is to big for it. It's a 12 gal tank with a bio-wheel filter.

Any ideas?
Thanks

try buying some sponge and rubber banding it over the outflow. Also raising the water level as high as possible can help too.

My only caution about restricting the output is that it can burn up the impeller.
