Here are four threads from various members that should cover everything you need to know about cycling, be it 'fish in' or 'fishless':

I lose track of all the posts I make... maybe I should start subscribing to certain threads. Anyway, is there a safe way to do partial water changes without a siphon? In all the haste to get everything my fish need, I forgot to buy a siphon and a bucket. Also I hear it's best to 'age' the water before you pour it into the tank. Is there a special process when it comes to aging the water or can you just leave it in a bucket or a 1 gallon water jug before pouring it in? I was thinking that maybe I could buy a couple 1 gallon water jugs and just fill and pour with those until I get a siphon.

You could use a big cup, or just regular cups to pour into the 1 gallon jugs, but it will be a really tedious job.

I don't age my water, but there's really no harm in doing so...the only "real" aging method is simply leaving your water out for as long as you'd like it. There are some water conditioners that claim to age your water, but I ignore those.

The idea of "aging water" really comes from more sensitive fish. Letting your water sit out to let any compressed gases work their way out is good for fish that might be more susceptible to toxic gases trapped in their water. In my experience, though, bettas aren't really sensitive to it at all.
