Welcome to the forums and to the betta addiction.

I'm sure when you go out looking for a fish, you'll see one that catches your eye. The choice of deciding on a male or female is entirely up to you, just go with whatever calls to you.

For backgrounds, don't forget you can make them too, if you don't see any in stores that suit you. I use cardboard and textured spray pain to make a rocky/sandy looking background for my tanks.

A house ivy? You're sure this is okay? I'm not good on my list of aquarium plants, but I've yet to hear of this.

Anyways, one will not suffice in throwing off a water change for the day. Not sure how big a house ivy is, however. You would need a nice planting of plants, more than just one or two. If you have a tank filled with real plants, you could probably throw off water changes for a week or so. The less plants, the more often will still be needed.
