I'm looking for a heater for a 10 gallon tank. I want it to be able to turn on/off automatically and maintain a solid 80*F (I dont want the flat one) Please recommend a reliable one with good reviews and a link if possible.

Next, I'm wondering if having the carbon filters with my topfin filter is required. I've heard people say that you can replace the carbon with something else and it works the same. Anybody have any idea?

I'm looking for a piece of driftwood similar to this one. http://www.mosswall.com/ebay/image/PL/PL-CR09-05.jpg I want it to have 3 different tiers that branch out so that I can grow plants on it like the plants growing on this one. I've searched a few places but couldnt find one like this. Anybody have any idea where I can find one?

I plan on growing grass on the bottom of my aquarium like that picture as well. Should I get plain rocks/pebbles or should I spend a bit more and get the substrate with fertilizer and such?

:) im not too sure about the heater, i forgot what brand myn is but it keeps a good constant temperature and turns off when the water is the right temp. I just got a new tank tho with a different heater. As for the driftwood, where have u looked? i found a few really nice pieces at my lfs. I think if u want to grow grass u should have a substrate and fertilizer as they tend to grow fairly slowly with normal gravel.

I have http://www.walmart.com/ip/Tetra-Heater-1-ct/10291809 and http://www.walmart.com/ip/Tetra-Heater-1-ct/10291808. They are both awesome heaters. I haven't had any problems with them. Not sure about the other two questions. Sorry, if I wasn't much help.

What is your "lfs"? I checked my petsmart and I looked through 600 pages of auctions on ebay. I tried to google it as well but the random private websites that came up didnt have what I want either.

I've seen this one around. I understand that there are a few good reviews on it, but there are bad reviews as well. Tt seems that this heater is stuck on the "maintain 78*" I want to be able to adjust it to my liking because sometimes it gets really hot here and sometimes at night it gets really cold.

LFS = Local Fish Store

Having a heater that will maintain a certain temperature is ideal for fluctuating ambient temps (assuming it works properly). Adjusting your heater constantly can turn out to be bad for your fish.

Larger volumes of water are easier for maintaining a constant temperature. The smaller you go (i.e. less than 10 gallons) the more you have to become OK with "fairly" consistent!

I highly recommend the Marineland Stealth line of heaters. They're reliable, lifetime guaranteed, and unbreakable. I use one in my turtle tank, and when I set that temp at 80, it stays right at 80. I love it.

Something isn't quite right with mine then (50 watt Stealth Pro in a 5 gallon). I have it set to 84 and my thermometer is reading 79.

People said I shouldn't worry about it because the thermometer reading is ideal. I'm thinking maybe the temperature is a lot warmer around the heater (84) and cooler on the other side (79)?
