Betta with SBD

I bought a male, double tail half moon betta for my friend. He's absolutely stunning. I got a 2.5 gallon tank, natural substrate, a silk plant, food, etc. He didn't have SBD at Petco (but then again, the cup was so tiny, it would have been hard to tell).

Once I put him in the tank, he's just floating on top... vertically though. I didn't feed him for a day so far, but he doesn't seem to be improving. He'll let peas fall to the floor and he'll ignore pellets. Since my friend is very inexperienced, I don't want to give a fish that has SBD. However, the bday is in 2 days...

How long does it take for SBD to go away (usually)?
How do I treat it?
He still hasn't pooped yet. He may be constipated. Stupid Petco just drops in a huge shrimp pellet -_-

I would give him a day, if nothing happens, keep the fish and stop by walmart for a new one...i know it sounds kinda bad...new one...anyway im sure he would be fine in your care if you are able to keep him.
