If you look for a little white egg spot behind where they do their business, You will be able to tell. It will be there if it is a girl, and not if it is a boy.

My girl is very aggressive, and some boys can have shorter fins. They normally don't flare their gills though.

Females can flare their gills. And young males can have what looks like eggspots too. Neither of those are really good methods for telling gender.

It kind of looks like a female to me, her beard isn't very visible.

Eek I did think a saw an egg spot but I'm not 100% I will try to take a picture from underneath. I have no idea how old he/she is. But like I said he/she did flare their gills all the way out. What's the best thing todo wait?

I think your betta is a male.

To get him to flare, put a mirror up to him/her. Bettas usually hold still for a couple of seconds when they flare, so try to snap a full profile picture.

I find that looking at all of the fish's features overall is the best way to tell because there is no one tell-tale sign of sex (well, except with some bettas, in which you can literally see their ovaries through their pale bodies; then, it's a pretty safe bet that they're females).
